Women's History Month: Lucy Stanton Day Sessions!

March officially marks the beginning of Women's History Month! Let’s kick start this amazing month by recognizing a woman that has inspired many with her undying hunger for higher education and human rights, Lucy Stanton Day Sessions; or more commonly known as Lucy Stanton!

Born on October 16th, 1831 in Ohio, Lucy Stanton Day Sessions was an American abolitionist and feminist figure, notable for being the first African-American woman to complete a four-year course of study at a college or university. In 1850, she completed a Ladies Literary Course from Oberlin College.

Stanton was born free to Margaret and Samuel Stanton, who were previously enslaved. Influenced by the injustices her parents suffered, Stanton took an interest in education and became an important figure in the fight for equal rights. At Oberlin College, Stanton was very active in the Ladies' Literary Society, and was invited to present a speech at her graduation entitled "A Plea for the Oppressed," which expressed her abolitionist sentiments.

Fresh out of school, Lucy Stanton began working as a principal at a school for newly freed slaves in Cleveland. On April 9th, 1853, Stanton became the first African-American woman to publish a work of fiction entitled "Charles and Clara Hays.”

On February 18th, 1910, Lucy Stanton Day Sessions passed away in Los Angeles, California at the age of 78. Stanton’s wonderful impact continues to defy stereotypes and encourage many to pursue a higher education, especially women of color.
