In a world of vast communication and new age technology, the hobby of writing had seemed to lessen over the years until recently. Since the rise of COVID and the United States’ choice to enforce quarantine laws in March 2020, writing has entered and changed the lives of many.
Many people use writing as a coping mechanism. Whether they write down their emotions or create a To-Do list to help them focus better when having a cloudy mind. Others may use it as a way to keep themselves organized. Different kinds of writing like bullet journaling and story writing help keep the idea of writing circulating in pop culture.
Literature like Harry Potter or Twilight help pop culture connect to writing through books and movies by understanding the audience. Literature normally has a target audience, and these specific pieces were targeted to Gen Z which is the generation to spread writing within pop culture. Without story writers and the creation of writing in general, movies, books, and other media wouldn’t exist. One of my favorite movies is After, written by Anna Todd. It was originally a novel on Wattpad and because of its popularity, it instantly became a Netflix favorite.Since writing is such a broad topic, there aren’t any specific rules in doing so. I used to think that poetry, for example, had to rhyme and had to be short. Over time, I realized that you can make writing your own, no matter what style you may convey. People assume that poetry has to have a specific platform like spoken word poetry, written poetry, and even blackout poetry. However, no one talks about Instapoetry. It is a term used to describe poetry that people post on Instagram. Many poets have grown from the scene and created something amazing with their writing such as Rupi Kaur. She's one of my favorites and she began her journey from Instapoetry. Her poetry is simplistic but the meanings are complex.
While writing dominates pop culture, never forget that each writer is unique to their own. Everyone expresses themselves differently and it's up to you to figure out how you can do so on your own terms. Leave a comment below and express how you use writing in your life.
