Writing Myths

As a writer I must admit writing has not always come easy to me. In fact, more often than not it's difficult. I’m sure many can relate to this. I’ve always wondered what it is that novelists and poets had that made them great writers?

Were they just born with it? Did God give them an extra sprinkle of creativity? After reading through blogs, articles and watching interviews I have come to the realization that successful writers struggle too! Shocker!

As a result of this I have decided to compile a list of myths about writing. I hope this eases your mind as it did mine.

“Good writers know exactly what they want to say before they start writing.”

The truth is even the best writers don’t always start out knowing what to write. Famous writer Anne Lammot states, “very few writers really know what they are doing until they've done it. Nor do they go about their business feeling dewy and thrilled.”

The writing process can be daunting and you might struggle to start but it happens to everyone. You can begin without having it all figured out. If you do, take comfort in knowing you're in the majority.

“Good ideas are special and unique.”

Your ideas don’t have to be groundbreaking, What makes an idea good is your perspective. I’ve quoted Mark Twain in a previous blog with his famous saying,

“There is no original thought. There is no thought that hasn’t already been thought.” Because he’s right. As unique as we’d like to be there is no completely original thought that comes out of the blue. I like to think of ideas as collections of information that we continuously add onto.

What makes our ideas “original'' is not the subject itself, our perspective or our experience with the subject. This is what makes something worth writing and reading.

“Reading a lot will make you a better writer.”

While reading is great and can help you to gain a better idea of how you want to write; reading will not make you a better writer. Reading will make you a better reader. The only way to become a better writer is to write. Practice makes perfect. You must write.

“Simple language seems dumb.”

Clear and simple language is the best language. While there is a place for poetic, fanciful language it is not always necessary. You might be tempted to use impressive language and show off your skills, however, you must remember the purpose of your writing which is to communicate with your reader.

Using fancy wording might be impressive, but there's nothing worse than having to reread something 10 times due to lack of comprehension.

The purpose of writing and language is communication and the ultimate goal is to communicate with the reader. If you can effectively do that then you are a successful writer. Simple language can be very effective.
