Born in Punjab, India and later emigrating to Canada, Rupi Kaur has become a very well known author, poet, illustrator and photographer. She's best known for her poetry book titled Milk and Honey.
At just 21 years old, Rupi Kaur wrote, illustrated and self published her first book Milk and Honey. She sold over 10 million copies along with her second book, The Sun and Her Flowers. The content of her work discusses love, loss, trauma, femininity, and healing.
I was introduced to Rupi Kaur when I was a Junior in high school so, I haven’t known her work for long however, the few poems I have read were heart heavy and emotional. Her writing style digs deep into the thoughts that create her mind. Although it isn’t difficult to understand, the interpretations can be slightly different.
One of Rupi Kaur’s poems that could be up for interpretation is her InstaPoem that is untitled. It was written July 23rd, 2015 and the poem described a love that is troubled. The narrator is not understanding why their partner doesn't want them one day but then does the next. It becomes a cycle of emotional damage and the narrator self deprecates towards the end of the poem. This can be seen as romantic chaos or, how I view it, the troubled relationship between teenagers and their parents.
All in all, Rupi Kaur has made herself known as a self published author for her very first book and a heartfelt writer. She writes to connect with the audience and make them feel something too. Through her work on love, loss, trauma, femininity, and healing; she offers different perspectives in situations and slight interpretations.
