That is a question english majors are constantly asked. As an english major, I myself have been asked this question more times than I can count. The truth is most people either have no clue or grossly underestimate what you can do with an english degree. This is why I love answering this question, as it always seems to leave people intrigued.
Most people automatically assume that if you major in english you must want to be an english teacher. While that is a career choice many english students pursue, being an educator requires a certain grace and patience that not all of us have. I tip my hat to all educators. God bless their souls.

Every aspect of life requires communication whether it's a text, a social media post, a work email, a business memo, or even a song. Effective communication is essential and just about every field of work requires some level of it

For example, a history major could minor in english literature and increase their skills and knowledge. Likewise, a business major could take some technical writing courses to expand their expertise.
