Making someone else understand your point of view can be tough. While writing an argument paper can be tougher. In any major, there are going to be different kinds of paper to write about. One of them is an argument paper. I remember my first time writing an argument paper. When I heard about writing it, the first thing that came to my mind was “Oh, this is going to be so tough. How will I do this?” Luckily, I had the best professor who shared some tips on writing an argument paper. In this blog, I will share those tips which will help you write an argument paper in a simple and effective way.
Firstly, think of the topic which you can argue about. For example, the argument paper can be about “Having a Gun at Home Should be Ban”.
Also, make sure you know something about the topic before you research it. Knowing something about your topic before doing research will help you more to stand by your argument. For instance, if you are doing an argument paper on “Having a Gun at Home Should be Ban” you should be aware of some incidents that have happened because of people having an access to guns at home.

Start collecting good amounts of research information that can make readers support your argument. For the sources, you can use Journals, websites articles, scholarly critique, etc.
In the first paragraph, don’t go directly to your point. Give a brief summary of your topic. This will help the reader to have background information about the topic. For example, in “Having a Gun at Home Should be Ban” we should start our first paragraph by telling the definition of a gun. Moreover, how it is used to protect people. Likewise, the authorities who should have access to a gun, etc.
Your thesis statement should indicate your point of argument that you will stand by in the paper. If we look at the same example topic as above, the thesis statement would be Having a gun at home can cause domestic violence, suicide risks and murder.
This is a very important point. In your paper make sure that you do give information on the other argument points of you as well. We want to provide extensive research for both sides. For example, if I am arguing about why we shouldn’t have guns at home. In my paper, I will have both the advantages and disadvantages of having guns at home. However, the point that is opposite to my argument should be explained briefly because remember the key is to have our side of the argument debunk the opposing side.
Those were the tips my Professor gave us in the class. When I did my argument paper for that class, I followed these tips. I found them very helpful, easy, and effective to use. Likewise, it helps me to stand up for my argument. After reading my argument paper, my Professor agreed with my point of view. When the reader agrees with your point, this indicates that you have done the work of giving good information and making the reader understand your perspective. Have you done an argument paper before? What are the tips you used? Share down below!
